October shaped up to be one of those months for cinema, one where the summer blockbuster season transitioned into the Oscar-bait stage with barely any notice or lull in box office figures.
With Joker, we witnessed emergence of a new genre, more of a “graphic-novel movie” than anything we usually associate with the usual capes and tights sagas. Robert Eggers returned to the ever-full well of New England horror for The Lighthouse, which will make you think twice before shooing away that seagull. JoJo Rabbit plays with your emotions and psyche with a happy-go-lucky Hitler, though luckily this one only lives inside a little boy’s mind.
And the best movie of the year might just be Parasite, from South Korean director Bong Joon-ho. But I have a feeling Martin Scorcese, who got the band back together for The Irishman, will have something to say about that before the year is out.
