October @ The Movies
October shaped up to be one of those months for cinema, one where the summer blockbuster season transitioned into the Oscar-bait stage with barely any notice or lull in box office figures.
With Joker, we witnessed emergence of a new genre, more of a “graphic-novel movie” than anything we usually associate with the usual capes and tights sagas. Robert Eggers returned to the ever-full well of New England horror for The Lighthouse, which will make you think twice before shooing away that seagull. JoJo Rabbit plays with your emotions and psyche with a happy-go-lucky Hitler, though luckily this one only lives inside a little boy’s mind.
And the best movie of the year might just be Parasite, from South Korean director Bong Joon-ho. But I have a feeling Martin Scorcese, who got the band back together for The Irishman, will have something to say about that before the year is out.
Book people: I am working on the non-Amazon future of digital reading. Tell me what you hate about current e-readers, e-books, or anything digital reading. 📚📖
I am aware my BAN UMBRELLAS IN MIDTOWN proposal has detractors. While we strive to one day achieve the goal of an umbrella-free NYC, we need change NOW.
This is why I am recommending CONGESTION PRICING for umbrella users below 60th st. Fees for golf umbrellas slightly higher.
The XFL Draft is live. They are doing it via ZOOM conference. They are using a Timer app in Windows as the draft clock.
This league is off to an amazing start.
99% of Android tablets that have been sold are in the back of your local pizza place being used for the 70 different delivery apps. The other 1% are in Ubers.
This NYTimes photo essay on NYC Block Parties is a beautiful reminder of how lucky I am to live in New York.
Random OMNY Thoughts (or, Stopped Making Sense)
The new OMNY readers are being tested on the 456(IRT). They are being affixed to the right side of the subway turnstile. Makes sense, because that’s where all the turnstile’s guts are situated. And that makes sense, because almost everyone is a righty and putting a token in the slot/swiping a MetroCard is easiest in your dominant hand.
One of the nicest features OMNY is the ability to use a smart device (like a watch) with a pre-stored transit card to “just tap and go.” But overwhelmingly, people wear their watch on their left wrist. Not looking so sensible anymore.
This is either going to lead to a new “subway shuffle” dance, or people inadvertently activating the turnstile to their left. Interesting to see how it shakes out as the rollout expands in the coming years. Either way, it’s a great example of engineering and finance’s requirements getting prioritized over user experience.

Just started reading The Hobbit again. Read it the first time when I was 13. Surprised how much of it still feels familiar, especially the description of Bag End. 📚
Just trying to get back to the Internet I loved, not this new scary one. Now I’m gonna go enjoy the weekend.

Gonna try and use this the way Twitter was in 2009 – lots of bad food pics w/flash & half-formed thoughts about movies
